The decarbonization of ASEAN’s real estate sector requires the collaboration between owners, occupiers, developers, financiers and solution providers to deploy effective low-carbon solutions that take into account the full life-cycle emissions of buildings. Clear demand side signals grounded in the consistent quantification of whole life carbon performance of built assets can drive sustainable innovation along the full value chain and enhance the business case for action.

This WBCSD workshop will introduce the Market Transformation Action Agenda for the Built Environment to the ASEAN business community in order to support a shift towards Whole Life Carbon assessment as a driver for competitiveness and resilience. Participants will get the opportunity to discuss the benefits of a Whole Life Carbon approach and the current barriers to widespread adoption, and they will together develop an action plan for how it can be mainstreamed with businesses as well as regulators in the region. The workshop will cover:

• What embodied / whole life carbon assessment means and why it matters strategically and commercially;
• How it can be measured (practical case studies);
• What levers and solutions are available in design, construction and procurement to tackle embodied / whole life carbon emissions, with ASEAN examples

The result of this workshop could be the formation of an ASEAN-focused coalition of companies to take part in WBCSD’s global built environment decarbonization agenda.
